Luis Chan, Chinese, 1905 to 1995, oil painting on panel depicting a beach genre scene. Signed and dated 1970, lower left. Framed. Luis Chan was born in Panama in 1905 and moved to Hong Kong in 1910. Luis spent his early days working as a typist in a law firm and designing fonts for a ferry boat company. Chan is a self taught artist who painted in his spare time. He learned through a correspondence course from the Press Art School in London. Luis Chans art does not concern so much with being western or eastern. He focused on the imagination brought to his works. These features come from Chans wild imagination and use of a kaleidoscopic range of fantastical colours, which are teeming with childlike whimsy.
