Lot 0950: AMERICAN STIEFF STERLING SILVER REPOUSSE CUTLERY SET

41 reviews

An American Stieff sterling silver repousse cutlery set with a Rose pattern. The handle of each item is adorned with repousse floral decoration. Circa mid 20th century. The set includes a ladle, a carving knife, a butter knife, and three two pronged forks, one of which is a carving fork with a lever. All items are marked with The Stieff Company Silversmiths, S. Kirk and Son Inc., stainless steel and sterling silver standard marks. Note: Samuel Kirk and Son was founded in 1815 when Philadelphia-trained Samuel Kirk finished his apprenticeship under James Howell and moved to Baltimore. Attracted by the prosperous port, Kirk opened his shop at 212 Market Street (later known as 106 Baltimore Street) with fellow silversmith, John Smith. After the partnership was dissolved in 1821, Samuel Kirk carried on the business alone until his eldest son, Henry Child Kirk, became a partner in 1846. The company operated under the names Samuel Kirk & Son and S. Kirk and Son, and when taken over in 1979 by the Stieff Company, the company was renamed Kirk Stieff to withhold and capitalise on their glowing prominence. Antique American Silver Cutlery, Tableware And Serveware Collectibles.
