Lot 0037: FRENCH ETCHING BY GEN PAUL PAUL TRELADE SIGNED

41 reviews

Paul Trelade or Gen Paul, French, 1895 to 1975, hand tinted etching, Rue de Lourdes, Lourdes Street. Signed in pencil, lower right. Framed. Gen Paul is a leading artist of the Ecole de Montmartre, Gen Paul was born there at 96 de la rue Lepic, which was a house painted by Vincent Van Gogh. He first worked as a furniture decorator and then enlisted in the French Army during World War One. He was severely wounded twice and on the second occasion lost his leg. Gen Paul then returned to Montmartre and formed a friendship with another artist who lived close by, Juan. At about this time he was also introduced to printmaking techniques by Eugene Delatre. Apart from that, Gen Paul received no formal art training. His first exhibited painting, a view of the Moulin de la Galette, was shown in Paris in 1916. Gen Pauls paintings, aquatints and etchings of the early 1920s are often compared to the art of such contemporary Parisians as Maurice Utrillo and Maurice Vlaminck. After 1925, however, Gen Paul, began developing a unique form of expressionism that promoted a sense of motion through strong diagonals and clashing elements of abstraction and realism. Modern European Graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.
