Carl Augustus Heber, German American, 1875 to 1956, bronze sculpture Bondage, 1911. Signed and dated to the base. This sculpture was adopted by suffragists as a symbol for the womens suffrage movement. Carl Augustus Heber was an American sculptor noted for his public monuments. Heber was born in Stuttgart, Germany and at a young age moved to Dundee, Illinois. He moved to Chicago where he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago with Lorado Taft.
