Lot 0288: FRENCH BRONZE STUDY OF BALZAC AFTER AUGUSTE RODIN

41 reviews

A vintage French cast bronze Nude Study C, after the original sculpture, 1892 to 1893, by Auguste Rodin, French, 1840 to 1917. Circa: 1970s. Signed, A. Rodin, on the sculpture. Mounted on a rectangular shaped granite stand. Balzac, a type C study, is one of the first studies carried out by Rodin in 1892, in preparation for his memorable portrait of the famous French writer Honore de Balzac. This study presents Balzac as a middle aged man with cropped hair, a penetrating gaze, defiantly crossed arms, and a protruding belly, standing in a way that conveys no nonsense physicality and inner confidence. The bulging stomach recalls images of Bacchus and satyrs on ancient Greek pottery, but the folded arms minimize this feature, endowing the torso with the portly strength of an aged athlete.
