Lot 0582: BOX BELONGING TO GEORGE SPECK AND STAATS COTSWORTH

A mid 20th century case for storing art equipment, belonging to Staats Cotsworth, American, 1908 to 1979 and C. George Speck, Ph.D, American, 1928 to 2018. Inscribed to the cover: Watercolors by Staats Cotsworth. The paper label inside is inscribed: Case property of Staats Cotsworth. Also has an attached to the cover paper label that reads: George Speck, Ph.D 360 E 55th St. Apt. 711 New York NY 10022-4120. Note: Staats Cotsworth was an American actor in old-time radio. He is perhaps best known for playing the title role in Casey, Crime Photographer. He was also known as an artist. He attended several art schools in this country and studied for seven years in Paris, at the Academie Colarossi. His work included illustrating Ernest Peixottos book, A Bacchic Pilgrimage, published by Charles Scribners Sons and painting three murals for some swank bowling alleys in Washington. His work was exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Water Color Club in Philadelphia. Virginia born artist C. George Speck, Ph.D received his BA in Art from the University of Virginia under the mentorship of Professor Charles Smith. After university he moved to New York and took classes at the Art Students League before leaving for Europe, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and Ecole des Metiers dArt in Paris. After returning to the United States Speck attended the City College of New York where he obtained a MA degree in Art and English. In 1968 George Speck was awarded from New York University a Doctorate in Art Therapy, the first such degree. Widely acclaimed as a multi-media artist, he was renowned as a prolific, versatile painter, carver of fine woodcuts, sculptor of ingenious papier mache figures.
