Lot 0285: ANTIQUE 11TH C BYZANTINE BRONZE CEREMONIAL CROSS

41 reviews

An antique 11th-century Byzantine bronze flat-hammered ceremonial cross with flared arms ending in serifs. The arms are garnished with embossed medallions of Christian Saints and ornaments. The large and richly detailed cross belongs to the Ravenna School of Byzantine arts, the remanent of Eastern Roman Empire in terms of manufacture and style, but certain details and the general complexion of the cross also point to a clear influence on Romanesque Arts from the early decades of the High Middle Ages in Europe. This type of crosses was used during festive processions. The item comes with a stand. Antique Historical And Religious Items, Medieval Collectibles.
