An antique Byzantine cast bronze reliquary cross, known as an enkolpion. It depicts an engraved image of crucified Jesus Christ, arms outstretched upon the cross. He wears a collobium, a sleeveless garment. The reverse features an engraved representation of Virgin Mary portrayed in the orans prayer pose. Reliquary crosses were popular in the Orthodox world in the Byzantine and post Byzantine centuries. They were composed of two halves joined by a hinge. Circa the 8th century AD.
