An antique Byzantine cast bronze reliquary cross, known as an enkolpion, with a hinge suspension loop. It depicts an image of crucified Jesus Christ, arms outstretched upon the cross. He wears a collobium, a sleeveless garment. The reverse features a representation of Virgin Mary portrayed in the orans prayer pose. On the ends of the arms are four busts of the evangelists. Reliquary crosses were popular in the Orthodox world in the Byzantine and post Byzantine centuries. They were composed of two halves joined by a hinge. Circa the 8th century AD.
