Lot 0427: ANTIQUE WOODEN AFRICAN MASKS, BAULE AND CHOKWE

41 reviews

The lot includes a vintage Mbolo Baule peole African mask from the Ivory Coast. Mblo Baule masks of this type are idealized portraits of ndoma - respected people who have gone through all the stages of initiation and have a family. Such masks are characterized by fine details in the carving, a characteristic image of hair on the head and high quality workmanship in general. Scars indicate the age and social status of a respected person. The purpose of Mblo masks is to entertain in dance performances associated with the cult of ancestors during the holidays, when meeting important guests or at the funeral of respected women. And an African Chokwe mask from Angola. This is a female mask worn by men imitating seductive young women with suave dances. Nicely detailed and beautifully scarificated. Tribal Art For Home Decor, Collectible African Masks.
