A pair of matching antique Japanese white vases with rich ornamental gilding. The vases are hand-painted with depictions of bamboo trees and birds. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province. Since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated. Hieroglyphical hallmarks on the bottom of both pieces translate as Satsuma Nippon and refer to the earlier period of the Meiji era, 1868-1913.
