Lot 0155: PORTRAIT OF SAINT FABIOLA VATICAN MOSAIC STUDIO

41 reviews

A mosaic painting depicting a female profile with red clothes, clearly in a Neoclassic decorative style. The inscription on the back indicates that the item was made in Studio del Mosaico in Vatican City, Italy. Personal number 5102A. Wooden frame with a handpainted golden gilt ornament. The artwork was made after the now lost painting by Jean-Jacques Henner, 1829 to 1905, a French religious artist. It depicts Saint Fabiola, a 4th century Christian saint of noble Roman descent who under the influence of the Church Father Jerome converted to Christianity and then worked as a nurse. The worldwide interest in this particular artwork and saint rose up after the acclaimed curatorial exhibition by Francis Alÿs at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Religious Fine Art For Collectors.
