A very nice Russian silver centerpiece with an admirable exterior made in a trompe-l'oeil technique with braiding base, a raised gilt wash spider and fly and two naturalistically modeled chicken head handles to the sides. Raised on four spherical legs. Marked on the bottom with an 84th silver standard next to a female head in a kokoshnik turned to the right and other Russian hallmarks. Trompe l’oeil, meaning fool the eye, is a term traditionally applied to paintings exhibiting such photographic detail as to make the viewer believe they are actually seeing the object depicted. When used to describe these late nineteenth century works of Russian silver, the term refers to the way these pieces simulate birch bark wood. Objects decorated to look like wood were quite popular in Russia in the second half of the nineteenth century. Decorative Art, Russian Silver Antiques And Collectibles. Weight: 386 g.
