An antique Japanese Meiji period bronze figural group. The figure is modelled as a boy reading a book while seated on the back of a large ox in mid step, his other hand holding a wire rope attached to the nose ring of the large beast. Marked with an impressed signature cartouche reading Gyoko Akemitsu saku. Presented on a hand carved lacquered wooden stand. Circa: late 19th century.
