An antique Japanese 19th century lidded bronze censer skilfully hand engraved and inlaid with mixed metals including silver, brass and copper. One side depicts a kitsune under the pine tree branch, the other side depicts a bird among bamboo thickets. On the sides there are embossed handles in the form of faces of mythical creatures. The lid is decorated with a very fine relief figurine of a Kirin, a legendary hooved chimerical creature. The censer is mounted on four scrolled legs. Impressive example of Meiji metalworker`s skill.
