Dokai Ito, Japanese, 1874 to 1940, antique sandal wood carved figure of Kannon. Dokai Ito became a sculptor under the influence of Doraku Yoshida, Meiji era, late 19th and early 20th century. After the death of Doraku Yoshida, Dokai Ito carved this statue to place it before the tablet of the deceased. Kannon is the Japanese god of compassion and mercy, the keeper of peace and reliever of troubles. The lot also contains detailed information about the figure written in pencil on a separate paper.
