Maria is the heroine of the poem The Fountain of Bakhchisarai by A.S. Pushkin, 1834, and the ballet of the same name by B.V. Asafiev, 1934. Slavic beauty, a concubine from the harem of the Crimean Khan Giray, dying at the hands of a jealous rival Zarema. The role of Mary was brilliantly performed by the outstanding ballerina G.S. Ulanova. According to the author, it was she who served as a model for the sculpture Maria.
