Maria is the heroine of the poem The Fountain of Bakhchisarai by A.S. Pushkin, 1834, and the ballet of the same name by B.V. Asafiev, 1934. Slavic beauty, a concubine from the harem of the Crimean Khan Giray, dying at the hands of a jealous rival Zarema. The role of Mary was brilliantly performed by the outstanding ballerina G.S. Ulanova. According to the author, it was she who served as a model for the sculpture Maria. The dancer is depicted standing on the toe of her right foot, the left leg and right hand are laid aside, the left hand is raised up. Inscribed on the front side of the stand: Maria, in the Cyrillic.
