A six panel Japanese folding screen, or byobu, features a narrative scene executed in ink, pigment, and gold wash on paper, depicting figures in traditional attire within a palace courtyard setting. The composition utilizes architectural diagonal lines and stylized trees to define the space, reflecting classical Japanese aesthetic traditions. The composition employs the traditional fukinuki yatai technique, a birds eye view with the roof removed allowing for a detailed view of both the residence's interior chambers and life in the inner courtyard. The panels are finished with a decorative silk brocade border and a black lacquered wood frame, while the reverse side is covered in a repeating geometric patterned paper.
