Boris Smotrov, Russian, born 1946, oil painting on canvas. The artwork depicts a snow-covered village with a large central tree composed of geometrical pattern blocks. Titled The Russian Birch Tree. Dated 2004. Signed lower left and on the backside. Unframed. Boris Smotrov graduated from the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow. Abstracting from the current time and creating a universal bucolic space, the artist explores the folk carnival culture to find the visual code of Russianness. The dense, bright, saturated local color, simplified form, and almost poster-like clarity of the composition give Boris Smotrov's paintings the features of a pronounced fairy-tale, folklore, and epic origin.
