Lot 687 - ANCIENT PRE COLUMBIAN TAINO CARVED STONE PESTLE

An ancient Pre Columbian Taino carved stone pestle topped with an anthropomorphic figure of a deity. Such shaped pestles were used for ritual purposes, including grinding medicinal herbs during religious and shamanic ceremonies. The pestles head is shaped like a zoomorphic or anthropomorphic spirit zemi. The Taino style is characterized by large almond shaped or round eye sockets, a wide, flat nose, a clearly defined mouth, and stylized ear ornaments or hair elements. The bottom of the pestle widens, forming a flat or rounded base, convenient for grinding ingredients in special mortars.
