A Japanese bronze okimono sculpture after Ninomiya Sontoku, born Ninomiya Kinjiro, 1787 to 1856. He was a famous 19th-century Japanese agricultural leader, philosopher, and moralist. This sculpture captures the most iconic image of his youth, which became a national symbol of diligence and self-education in Japan: the boy is walking while reading a book, all while carrying a heavy bundle of firewood on his back. The sculpture is signed on the base.
