An oil on canvas painting attributed to Ivan Shishkin, Russian, 1832 to 1898. The scene features a central path winding through an atmospheric, sun-dappled deciduous forest. It realistically depicts a small herd of cows led by a figure, juxtaposed against fallen mossy logs and dramatic, vertical old-growth trees. Signed lower left. The canvas has been relined for preservation. Accompanied by several pages of expert documentation and research papers by the Center for Historical and Traditional Technologies at the D.S. Likhachev Russian Research Institute for Cultural and Natural Heritage, 2011. The experts identify the painting as an oil sketch attributed to the master Russian realist Ivan Shishkin, 1832 to 1898, for his famous 1864 masterpiece Herd in the Forest. Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin was a Russian Realist painter and draughtsman, best known for his landscape subjects.
