Claude Lorrain, French, 1600 to 1682, an etching on paper. Signed in the plate margin, printed on thin, neutral-white wove Japan paper, trimmed on the plate mark. The artwork is titled Le Port de mer a la grosse tour. It features a classic harbor scene. On the left stands a prominent round stone tower, on the right, large sailing ships are docked. In the foreground, several small figures are engaged in activity on the shore, which is a hallmark of Lorrains style to provide a sense of scale. Bears a paper label from The Rivolo Collection, on the reverse. Matted and framed. Dated 1641. Claude Lorrain was a painter, draughtsman and etcher of the Baroque era originally from the Duchy of Lorraine. He spent most of his life in Italy, and is one of the earliest significant artists, aside from his contemporaries in Dutch Golden Age painting, to concentrate on landscape painting. His landscapes often transitioned into the more prestigious genre of history paintings by addition of a few small figures, typically representing a scene from the Bible or classical mythology. Provenance: From John McCreerys album 200 Etchings, London, 1816. French Maritime Art, Antique Print, Old Master, Nautical Decor, Sailing Ships, Collector Item, Wall Art.
