An antique 19th century Russian Orthodox icon of the Virgin of the Sign, rendered in egg tempera and gold leaf on a wooden panel. The central iconography features the Virgin Mary in the Orans prayer posture with the Christ Child Emmanuel depicted within a circular medallion on her chest. The composition is flanked by four marginal saints painted within the borders of the panel. The work reflects traditional Eastern Orthodox liturgical art through its use of stylized drapery and a gilded background.
