Lot 212 - BERGMAN VIENNA COLD-PAINTED BRONZE PRAYER FIGURE

AN AUSTRIAN COLD-PAINTED BRONZE OF A MAN AT PRAYER EARLY 20TH CENTURY, BERGMAN FOUNDRY, VIENNA A finely cast Austrian cold-painted bronze figure of a man at prayer, executed by the Franz Xaver Bergman foundry, Vienna, in the early 20th century. The underside bears the characteristic amphora device enclosing a “B,” together with “MADE IN AUSTRIA,” corresponding to the registered mark employed by the Bergman workshop during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The mark is clearly struck and displays age-consistent patination. The figure is solid cast and finely hand-finished, with careful modelling evident in the drapery, hands, and facial features. The original cold-painted surface is preserved, with layered matte pigments and natural wear to raised areas consistent with period application. The subject—an Orientalist figure in prayer upon a patterned rug—accords with Bergman’s established repertoire of Middle Eastern figural subjects, characterised by expressive poses and narrative composition. The integrally cast base, formed as a geometric carpet, together with the overall surface, patina, and absence of later intervention, supports a date of circa 1890–1915 within Vienna workshop practice. Attribution Note: The present work is attributable to the Bergman workshop on the basis of the amphora “B” foundry mark, the quality of casting and hand-finishing, the retention of original cold-painted decoration with appropriate wear patterns, and the Orientalist subject and compositional treatment, all of which correspond closely with documented Bergman production of the period.
