An African Agbogho Mmuo hand-carved wooden helmet mask originates from the Igbo people of Nigeria, featuring a distinctive face characterized by a tapered face and small, circular eyes. The name translates to maiden spirit. These masks represent the spirits of deceased young women and embody the Igbo ideals of female beauty, purity, and grace. A prominent, openwork crest rises from the crown, bordered by a notched, gear-like perimeter and supported by two lateral projections. The interior is deeply hollowed, showing evidence of hand-tooling throughout the construction. Despite representing females, these masks are traditionally worn by men during annual harvest festivals and other important social ceremonies.
