An African hand carved wooden hand bell figurine, originating from the Galwa people of Gabon, features a carved double face head with characteristic kaolin-tinted facial features and a ringed neck. The hollowed, bell-shaped body is embellished with a low-relief zoomorphic figure, likely a turtle or lizard, and finished with notched vertical borders along the sides. Accompanied by a separate wooden clapper, the piece serves as a functional ritual instrument while incorporating the refined sculptural traditions of the Ogooue River region. The ridges along the sides of the figurine act like a rasp or scraper. When you run the stick over these notches, it creates a series of rapid vibrations that are amplified by the hollow wooden body, producing a distinct, rhythmic clacking or buzzing sound.
