Lot 438 - ANCIENT GRECO ROMAN ZOOMORPHIC SPINDLE WHORL

An ancient Greco Roman zoomorphic spindle whorl, ca. 300 BC to 100 AD, is carved of dark steatite in the stylized form of a turtle. The piece features a central circular perforation designed to sit on a spindle shaft, providing the necessary weight for spinning fibers. The dorsal surface is embellished with incised radial lines and notches along the perimeter to suggest the anatomical features of a tortoise shell. Such domestic implements were common throughout the Mediterranean basin, serving both functional and decorative purposes within the textile production process.
