An antique 19th-century African hand carved wood sculpture originates from the Yoruba people of West Africa, depicting a female figure in a kneeling posture associated with devotion and fertility. The figure is rendered with a prominent abdomen and hands resting upon the breasts, symbolic of maternity and the continuation of life. Fine vertical incisions detail the elaborate coiffure, while the facial features include almond-shaped eyes and traditional scarification marks. The naturalistic yet stylized form is carved from a single block of light-toned wood, displaying a dry, aged surface with visible grain patterns and historical wear.
