Finch enrolled in the 179th NY Vols. on April 2, 1864, in Hornellsville, NY to serve 3 years. Mustered in as 2nd Lieut. in Co. D on April 18, 1864. Promoted to 1st Lieut. on Aug. 8, 1864. Mustered out with his regiment June 8, 1865. He participated in the Battle of Cold Harbor, the Assault on Petersburg, the famous Mine Explosion, Weldon Road, Hatchers Run, Fort Stedman, and Appomattox Campaign to Lees Surrender.
