Sam Francis, American, 1923 to 1994, oil on canvas painting of an Abstract Expressionist composition in blue, yellow, purple, and black. Signed in the lower left. Undated. Framed. Samuel Lewis Francis was born in San Mateo, California. His first works were influenced by the Abstract Expressionism of Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky, and Clyfford Still. However, he quickly developed his own colorful abstract style after moving to Paris in 1950. Francis returned to California in 1962, settling at first in Santa Barbara and then establishing a studio in Venice, Santa Monica in 1963. Apart from Action painting, he also explored graphic media and printmaking. Collectible Mid Century Modernist Fine Art.
